Community Connections Online - Digital Inclusion Strengthens Social Connectedness

Derbyshire Dales CVS Social Connectedness invites everyone – residents, volunteers, community groups and local organisations – to Community Connections Online, a free, online event that shows how projects are helping to close the digital gap and how helping people get online also brings people together, reduces loneliness and builds stronger local networks.

This session on Tuesday 16 June at 10.30am will feature three guest speakers, a Questions and Answers segment, and time for informal networking so attendees can meet others, share ideas and form partnerships.

Why digital access matters for social connectedness

Digital skills do more than open websites – they open doors to people.

Digital skills are now essential for everyday life – from booking GP appointments to staying in touch with family and accessing benefits.

When someone can use a smartphone, tablet or the NHS App they can:

  • Stay in touch with family and friends through video calls and messaging, reducing isolation for older or housebound residents.
  • Join online community groups and social sessions
  • Access local services and events so people can take part in community life rather than missing out.

What to expect at the session

  • Connex Community Support and Platform will explain their support sessions that combine digital skills with companionship and peer support.

Rural Action Derbyshire (RAD) will provide an update on the Digital Support Derbyshire programme and the priorities for the next two years. RAD will also explain how you can:

  • Get involved to help others use computers.
  • Find local help with digital devices for people who need one-to-one support.
  • Access a digital device for someone who can’t afford one.
  • Apply for Digital Inclusion Grants to fund digital support projects (awards expected July/August)

Interactive elements:  Q&A and networking time to connect with volunteers, community groups and residents.

Who should attend

Members of the public will leave the session knowing where to get friendly, local help with devices and apps, and how to access a device – practical steps that make it easier to stay connected with family, neighbours and community life and how to get involved to support others with tech.

Community groups and volunteers will gain clear information on funding and support to run digital inclusion projects, ideas for combining tech training with social activities, and make contacts for partnership.
