Case Study 2 Social Connect, September 2025
Establishing Men’s Sheds in Derbyshire Dales through a Social Connectedness Event
In response to an absence of Men’s Sheds projects in the Derbyshire Dales, the DDCVS partnered with UK Men’s Sheds Association (UKMSA) and Eyam Open Doors.
The Social Connectedness Development Worker (SC DW) led the initiative to spark local interest and provide practical support, aiming to reduce loneliness, isolation, and their associated health risks, among men. The Social Connectedness Event held on 29 April 2025 at Eyam Church Centre, the Men’s Sheds Social Connectedness Event brought together community champions, local organisations, funders and public health representatives.
4 organisations covering Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and Grindleford expressed interest in setting up Men’s Sheds.
Grindleford group achieved significant progress: secured a venue, organising a first aid training course, held planning meetings and recruited 12 members Ongoing SC DW support has included: Joint session with UKMSA for tailored guidance. Assistance with constitutions, governance policies, insurance. Invitation to apply to the SC Discretionary Fund and signposting to additional local grants. Support to get UK MSA to grant them membership to unlock more resource information.
A Grindleford shed member said whilst attending a meeting, “I don’t know what I’d be doing if I wasn’t here now!”.
