Cubley Village Hall benefits from Better Derbyshire Dales Fund

A rural village hall has replaced its ninety-year-old floor thanks to a generous grant from the Better Derbyshire Dales Fund.

The floor at Cubley Village Hall – also known as The Mary Clowes Hall – was in a very poor state of repair and investigations revealed that a complete replacement was the only option.  Initial estimates placed the cost in excess of £10,000, and the trustees submitted bids for a number of grants, including to the Better Derbyshire Dales Fund, administered by ourselves.

With help and advice from Polly, the trustees were able to provide evidence to support the bid, and were delighted when a grant of £4,000 was given towards the project.  Additional funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, and from Councillor Steve Bull through the Derbyshire County Council Members Community Leadership Scheme, meant that the entire cost of replacing the floor and the underfloor plumbing was covered without the need to access the hall’s modest contingency funds.

Peter Harvey, Chair of Trustees at the hall, commented: ‘The new floor has made a huge difference to us, allowing the trustees to plan for monthly functions in the coming year, including the village pantomime, quiz and bingo nights, and Halloween and Christmas parties for the children.  Community use of the building will undoubtedly increase over the coming twelve months.’

Charlotte Holdsworth, the charity’s treasurer, added: ‘We were delighted to receive such positive and enthusiastic assistance from Polly and her colleagues at DDCVS, and we are keen to continue to encourage use of the hall for both group and private functions within our village community.’
