An update from the Alzheimer’s Society on their Dementia Friends programme
What is Dementia Friends?
Dementia Friends is a social action movement designed so that anyone can get involved and not only improve their understanding of dementia but also contribute to making their community more dementia-friendly. The Dementia Friends programme aims to change the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about Dementia.
How can I become a Dementia Friend?
- By visiting ‘Become a Dementia Friend’ and watching a short video. This is quick and easy (5 minutes). You will hear from people living with dementia and learn how you can help.
- Attend a free in person or virtual information session run by a volunteer Ambassador. This is more in-depth (45 minutes) and is a great way to learn a little bit more about dementia. The session is not classed as training but instead focuses on five key messages about dementia, explained through discussions and activities. Attendees then get the chance to turn their understanding into action by committing to at least one dementia-friendly action. There’s no action too big or too small – it could be anything from spending more time with a family member living with dementia through to sharing information about dementia on social media. After doing this, you’re a Dementia Friend!
Any group can request sessions from the Dementia Friends Ambassadors by emailing dementiafriends@alzheimers.org.uk. Alzheimer’s Society usually ask for at least one month’s notice and a minimum of 10 attendees.
